Abstract

This study on the competencies of elementary grades teachers in DepEd Northern Samar tried to assess the competence level of Music teachers in teaching Music in the public elementary schools, determined the stress levels of Music teachers in teaching Music, determined their attitude towards Music teaching, and assessed pupils’ performance level in Music. A descriptive-correlational research design was used in this study, a survey questionnaire and checklist were used in gathering the needed data. In testing the performance of the pupils versus the competence of the Music teachers in terms of their knowledge on the content of the Music subject that they are teaching, the same test items were administered. A perfect score of 35 was expected from the teachers for it is the content popular test items in Music on the Basic Education Curriculum of 2002. The findings revealed that the Music teachers in the central schools had a high level of competence in terms of teaching, guidance, classroom management, and evaluative skills. The moderate stress level was experienced by the teachers due to an over-crowded classroom. The self-rating of the teachers, as well as the pupils, showed a highly favorable attitude. To exceed the present level of competence by the teachers as well as the performance of pupils in Music, it is recommended that the teachers should be required to enhance their proficiency in reading notes and recognition of musical symbols. The relative ease which they teach on the subject begets desirable attitude, less stress and tension in Music teaching and dealing with pupil’s disruptive behavior when the required proficiency will be achieved.
