Conventional Method and Narrative Approach in ELT Classroom: A Comparative Study

Published 2021-09-01

Abstract

The study is an exploration in identifying the effectiveness of Conventional Method and Narrative Approach for learning English in English Language Teaching (ELT) classroom. This is an empirical data- based research with quantitative method that draws a conclusion which is capable of being verified through experiment by getting facts at first hand without regards for system and theory. This empirical study is considered to be the powerful support because of the evidence gathered through experiment that is useful in testing the hypothesis quantitatively. The research design is Two-Group, Pre-test – Post-test Design. In this experimental hypothesis testing research, a group which is disclosed to conventional method directly focusing on the syllabus of Technical English II is termed as ‘control group’ whereas, the group that is exposed to narration approach is termed as ‘experimental group’ not focusing directly on the syllabus of Technical English II. This study was accomplished among the randomly selected two sections of first year B. Tech. Engineering students of 2017-2018 batch during second semester at Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute. For quantitative studies the data management and analysis was performed through SPSS 20.0 version to statistically conclude the impact on the methods adopted. It has been statistically inferred that all the five factors of Narration Assessment Parameter (NAP) of the experimental group are highly significant due to the students’ participation in the narrative approach after listening; imitating and repeating the short stories and digital short stories they listened and watched.
