Abstract

Society is composed of different age groups like, children , adolescents, adults, elderly etc. Every age group has its importance and value in terms of productivity and contribution to the growth and development of society. The people who belonging to a young age are perceived to be the contributors and productive members of the society which is vice-versa for those belonging to the old age groups. The persons belonging to old age group are known as elderly, aged senior citizens or those in the golden age group.            A person who has lived a long life is viewed as an aged and ageing is the process of growing older or the effect of age. The effect is towards deterioration in psychological capabilities of a person. Conceptually there are different ways to understand ageing like chronological, superannuation, health wise and social obligations. The census of India uses the cut of age of sixty (60) years for determining a person as old.

Bhatia (1983) and Mukherjee (1972) have described the term ageing in terms of biological, psychological and socio-cultural perspectives. If a person possesses a youthful mentality, sociologically and psychologically, he she should be included in the younger generation in spite of being older in biological terms. Likewise, according to Tibbett’s (1960) ageing is best defined as the survival of people who have completed the traditional adult roles of making a living and child rearing and years following the completion of these tasks, represent an extension of life. So, ageing refers to deteriorative biological and psychological changes that occur is a genetically matured organism.
