Socio-Economic Condition of Affected Resettled People by Ukai Dam Project: A Case Study of Tapi District

Published 2021-07-24

Abstract

The law on land acquisition has been enacted in the country to meet the land requirement for development projects. In order to slow down the pace of development in the economy, land for agriculture and housing is being used for the establishment of such projects in the area where such large scale projects are being implemented, forcing the affected people of the local area to relocate or displace. A completely affected displaced person is one who loses and relocates both their land and home, while the affected people have lost their land in whole or in part.

In the present research, the study has been carried out by linking the affected talukas of Tapi district, Uchchhal, Nizar and Songadh, as a result of ‘Sardar Vallabh Sagar Project’ Ukai Dam. Attempts have been made to know the socio-economic condition of the rehabilitated people of Tapi district affected by Ukai Dam on the basis of primary as well as secondary data. The rehabilitation process of 124 affected villages has been done under 42 villages, in which information of 35 villages has become available, keeping in view that 20% of the villages of 35 new settlements comprising the affected villages have been selected as sample.
