Abstract

Multiple symptoms of a wide range of human diseases have been linked to disruptions in prostaglandin production and/or metabolism. Patients who overproduce prostaglandins often have a variety of symptoms, including pain, fever, inflammation, and diarrhea. Drugs that block prostaglandin production are useful for treating individuals with symptoms associated to prostaglandins in certain disease conditions. Recent years have seen the creation of prostanoid receptor-deficient mice that have been used in a wide range of illness models. These investigations have elucidated the functions of PG receptor signaling in several clinical states, raising the possibility that specific modulation of prostanoid receptors might be useful in the treatment of these states. Here, we examine these new insights into the therapeutic applications of prostanoid receptor signaling.
