Abstract

Through a single manifestation of nature, Ruskin Bond's protagonists in his poetry, short stories, and children's novels realise their spiritual affinity with creation. A single facet serves as a sign of harmony with nature and a transcendental vision of life, whether it is a cherry tree, a raindrop, a window on the roof from which to observe the world, a hidden pool, or an old banyan tree. Bond's move from adult to children's writer is highlighted in Angry River, which he deems his "first and perhaps best children's novel." Bond follows his protagonist's evolving relationship with the river, from great love and thanks for its many blessings to a knowledge of its duality and understanding of its magical nature.
