Mahanagar (The Big City) Modernity, Urbanity and Feminism in Question

Published 2021-08-13

Abstract

This article intends to ponder over the processes of interaction between women’s position in Indian society in the wake of urbanization and the challenges of modernity. And how Indian cinema specifically Bengali cinema responded to this process is the main contention of this article. Being an auteur, how Satyajit Ray created a space for the Bengali working women of the 60’s constitute a paradigm for Indian feminism. Mahanagar or the Big City (1963) is a glaring example of India women’s quest for self realization.
