Women and Conflict: A study of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory

Abstract

Conflictis thepart of every society whether the society is developed or developing though its intensity varies. It may be high at one place at one movement of time low at another place at another movement of time affecting each and every section of the society. In case of armed conflict in Kashmir Union Territory that started since 1989 affecting every section of the society but women doubly due to their sex on the one hand and being a vulnerable section of the society on the other hand. Work has been done on conflict but focusing on men’s role/position in conflict as conflict is considered as male centered, ignoring/under-valued women’s role/position/experiences/views in conflict. Men are often considered as protectors while women who need protection. In modern-days war women constitute the majority among the civilians’ casualties. In the times of conflict, women face number of challenges and subjected to prostitution, rape, molestation etc. From the above background the present paper tries to understand the impact of conflict on women particularly in the context of Kashmir Union Territory. It also tries to throw light on the impact of conflict on different aspects of women’s life. Inthis paper the two terms conflict and armed conflict are interchangeably used.
